Where the Wild Things Are

Earlier this month we took Aden and Danielle to see a production of Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are, performed by the Columbia City Ballet. The kids were enthralled. (It was Aden's idea after hearing about it when we went to see The Nutcraker.)

The weekend before the performance, some of the dancers performed excerpts from the ballet at the Richland County Library. On the wall of the children's library is a mural depicting a scene from Where the Wild Things Are, painted by Sendak himself. The kids enjoyed following Max around and got to meet one of the beasts. I can't believe I didn't have a camera with me. (The pictures were taken the day of the full ballet performance.)

Earlier on the day of the performance we saw Aden's best friend play a hockey game.

Princess for a Day

Danielle had her birthday party last weekend at the Columbia Marionette Theater. Seventeen little friends from the neighborhood, daycare, and church came to enjoy the performance of "Puss in Boots". (Right after Christmas, we brought Aden and Danielle to the Marionette Theater to see an adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen's "The Steadfast Tin Soldier".)

This year Danielly wanted to be dressed as Ariel for her birthday and have her party in the Underworld Sea Kingdom section of the theater. I have no idea where the girl got the idea she had to dress up for her party. Last year she insisted on wearing her Cinderella costume. Months before Christmas she kept talking about her Ariel party and costume. How could I not let her wear her costume and let her be princess for an entire day?
